Amarylis Coltraine may
have recently transferred to the New York City police force from

"one of us."

Dallas's friend Chief Medical Examiner Morris and
Coltraine had started a serious relationship, and from all accounts the
two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end
to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning
everyone from Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's
husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on Coltraine's life back in
Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case
and their own painful, shadowy pasts.

The truth will need to be
uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at
Cop Central addressed to Eve containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a
note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll
be sending yours to somebody else."

But Eve Dallas doesn't take
too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case,
whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

Once again, Nora Roberts, writing as J.D. Robb in this 28th book of the In Death series, manages to keep the excitement going. The relationship between Eve and Rourke is still going strong, although they don't fight as much in this book, thank goodness! The mystery is well written and interesting with enough twists to keep you guessing. An old nemesis pops up, as happens a good bit in these stories. Promises in Death is another high quality read in the series.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just didn't. The title is good, that's about all. The book is full of typos, incorrect grammar, misspelled words, and sometimes the wrong word entirely. Ignoring that, the writing style was awkward and choppy in some places. The characters were flat and uninteresting. The zombies in the book are a little bit different than the usual ones you read about or see in movies. While they were always around in the story, I felt like they could have been emphasized a little more. What Remains by Kay Holland is not a book I would recommend.

torture. Carved into her torso is the time it took her to die - in
hours, minutes, and seconds. And on the third finger of her left hand
has been placed a silver ring. Eve is catapulted back to a case nine
years earlier, when a man whom the media tagged "The Groom" put the city
on edge with a killing spree that took the lives of four women in
fifteen days. Eve and her partner Feeney, her friend and mentor,
couldn't stop him before he disappeared, only to resurface in other
parts of the world to kill and kill again. But now The Groom seems to
have come back to where he started. When it turns out that The Groom's
most recent victim was employed by Eve's billionaire husband, Roarke,
she brings him onto the case. A move that proves fitting when it becomes
chillingly clear that the killer has made it personal. The corpse was
washed in products from a store Roarke owns and laid out on a sheet his
company manufactures. With the Groom's monstrous return, Eve is
determined to finish him once and for all. Familiar with his methods,
she knows that he has already grabbed his next victim. But his sights
are set on the biggest challenge of his illustrious career - an
abduction that will test his skills and that promises to give him
satisfaction as he's never known. Time is running out on another woman's
life and for Eve...

Creation in Death is the twenty-fifth book in the In Death series written by Nora Roberts (writing as J.D. Robb). I've been slowly reading all the books in this series (and some of the novellas in between numbers) for over a year now.

The characters are real and engaging. They have grown and changed through the whole series. I enjoy how Roarke and Eve support and care about each other, even though they tend to fight a lot. Most of the characters have some snarkiness to them, and the sarcastic jibs help lighten the story which is about torture and murder.

The book is written well, the action is fast paced. It's hard to put this book down once you start reading it! Even though this book is later in the series, you can read it as a stand alone if you wish. But to get the full background on the characters and their stories, start from the first one, Naked in Death.

When Dr. Cyrus Mills
returned home after inheriting his estranged father's veterinary
practice, The Bedside Manor for Sick Animals, the last thing he wanted
was to stay in Eden Falls, Vermont, a moment longer than absolutely
necessary. However, the previously reclusive veterinarian pathologist
quickly found that he actually enjoyed treating animals and getting to
know the eccentric residents of the tiny provincial town-especially an
alluring waitress named Amy.

So Cyrus is now determined to make
Bedside Manor thrive. Not an easy goal, given that Healthy Paws, the
national veterinary chain across town, will stop at nothing to crush its
mom-and-pop competitor. And the rival vet practice isn't Cyrus's only
competition; a handsome stranger shows up out of nowhere who clearly has
a mysterious past with Amy. To top it off, Cyrus finds himself both the
guardian of a very unique orphaned dog and smack in the middle of
serious small town drama.

Dog Gone Back Soon is the second book in the Cyrus Mills series by Nick Trout. I reviewed the first book in the series, The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs here. It's not necessary to read the first book before this one, although the story picks up right after The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs ends.

The story is written well and flows smoothly. There are some great moments with animals, as is to be expected with a book about a veterinarian. The characters are growing in depth in this second book, and we are introduced to some new ones. I enjoy the quirkiness of the small town community.

A couple things in the story just didn't sit well. Cyrus falling for and going along with the blind date and all it entailed went too far for me. Then Cyrus diagnosing a human without the man asking for one and without any testing, Cyrus just blurting it out, was irresponsible and stupid. While Cyrus is a bit of a bumbler, he's not irresponsible or stupid, so that scene wasn't believable.

Everything with Stash, the labradoodle was wonderful. I wish there was more with him. Actually, I would have preferred more animal interaction throughout the whole book.

I was given a copy of Dog Gone Back Soon in exchange for my honest review. I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to anyone, especially animal lovers.

I hope everyone had a wonderful March! Here are my reading challenge wrap-ups. Now, I just started back with this blog and joined all the challenges in mid-March. As I was allowed to include what I had read in January and February, I've worked hard getting reviews done and links entered on the correct Reading Challenge pages. Here's all the books I've read and reviewed through March 31, 2014.

the pack's Alpha is too focused on eliminating the deadly threat to
consider working toward a cure. When a team of American scientists
arrive, talking of a vaccine, Danny is quietly hopeful.

Deanna

countless hordes of the walking dead. Within hours, her colleagues are
slaughtered…and it's only because of Danny that she manages to get out
alive.

Deanna unhinges Danny in every way, tempting him beyond
reason. She also pushes him to face the one thing he'd been avoiding:
his Alpha is wrong. Simply surviving isn't the answer…it can't be.

I received this ARC for free in exchange for an honest review. Survive to Dawn is the third book in the London Undead series by PJ Schnyder. The first thing I did was buy the first book in the series, Bite Me. I like to read series books in order, and I thought it would help give me background on what had happened so far. Actually, it wasn't necessary to do that with this series. Survive to Dawn can be read as a stand-alone book.

The premise for this series is a good one, werewolves fighting zombies. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the writing didn't stand up to the idea. There was next to no world building, the explanation for how the zombies were created and what that did to London was glossed over quickly.

There was very little character development. We find out that Danny is very old. Deanna's background is revealed a little more thoroughly as it relates to the storyline. Their relationship is meant to be something like love at first site, but there's absolutely no heat, no chemistry between them.

Unfortunately, I found myself just wanting to hurry the story along and be done with it. Even the zombies weren't very scary, although the scene where they found her scientist friend in the park was good. This zombie series just wasn't for me.

Few people walk the
streets of London since the zombie outbreak, but that's not an issue for
Seth. As a werewolf, he can handle himself and save humans reckless
enough to take a nighttime stroll. While on patrol he comes across a
group of people under attack. The one woman brave enough to take a stand
against the zombies catches his eye—and not just because of her way
with a gun. Learning the beautiful woman is homeless and fends for
herself only intensifies his urge to protect and care for her.

Maisie
can't help but admit that she's attracted to her werewolf rescuer.
She's drawn to Seth's strength and ferocity, and finds herself opening
up to him in ways she never imagined, even though she's determined to
not rely on Seth or anyone else. She doesn't want another person to get
hurt—or die—for her sake. She has enough scars, physical and emotional,
from the last time…

But when Seth realizes something is drawing the zombies to Maisie, there may be nothing he can do to save her…

The premise of this book, werewolves fighting zombies, caught my interest, so I grabbed it. I was definitely disappointed. It's not a long story, so little time was allowed for character or world development. Bite Me is the first book in the London Undead series by PJ Schnyder, so I expected some detailed background about how the zombies came about and more information about the werewolves coming out to fight them. Very little detail was given.

The only character with much background shown was Maisie, so she seems more of a real person. She has a great spitfire spirit. However, the relationship between her and Seth feels non-existent. There's no real chemistry shown between them. There are some explicit sex scenes.

The action moves along quickly, but there's not much of it. When the zombies attacked, I didn't feel any emotion from anyone. It's just not a book I'd recommend.

I'm not sure what to say about this book. I've had it on my reading list for ages and finally got to it, just to find it wasn't as spectacular as I'd hoped or imagined. Alice, after she lost her memory and thought she was twenty-nine and pregnant for the first time, was a sweet character. Her story was written in third person, but the author didn't take advantage of that "all knowing" style of writing, everything was shown as Alice perceived it. Interspersed in Alice's story, there were diary entries from Elisabeth, Alice's sister made to a psychiatrist, Dr. Hodges; as well as letters to an old beau written by Frannie, their adopted grandmother. These didn't add to the narrative at all, and would have made Alice's story flow better if just left out.

For me, What Alice Forgot was just an ok book. There are some really good moments with the children as she tires to learn to relate to these little people she doesn't remember. There are good lessons to be learned about moderation, in life, in family, in friendship.

Destined for an Early Grave is the fourth novel in the Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost. In my opinion, this is the best book of the series thus far. A dastardly villainous vampire is trying to snatch Cat right out of her dreams. Bones must go to extreme lengths to save her, and the lack of sleep and stress drives a wedge between them. All of their friends jump in to help, but that puts them in danger as well. The action doesn't stop in this book, neither does the roller coaster of emotion. Hang on tight, but do read it!

Halfway to the Grave is the first book in the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I found the premise of this story very interesting, a half-vampire that hunts and kills vampires. Freud would have a ball with her psyche!

For me, the story started out slow and didn't really pick up until after Cat and Bones start hunting together. There was too much time spent on her training with Bones and it got boring, even though their relationship started heating up during the time. This book is definitely not for younger audiences or anyone who is offended by explicit sexual scenes, as there are many.

I definitely wasn't expecting the ending to the book, but I'm not sure I liked it. Still, the book was entertaining overall and I'm intrigued enough to keep going in the series.

Well, here we start the fifth book in The Hollows series by Kim Harrison with Rachel dealing with the same problem as in the fourth book. The werewolf artifact. I still find the idea of this artifact and what it does just... weird. However, For a Few Demons More shoots back up to the quality of the first few books in the series.

Harrison writes characters that you can completely love, hate, like, loathe, or anywhere in between. She creates them in 3-D. Even the villains have soft sides. Everyone is constantly evolving. I have to admit, though, that sometimes I want to slap Rachel upside the head because she doesn't learn very quickly. She runs head-on into danger without a plan, she constantly wavers on her relationship with Ivy. It would be nice to see her grow up some.

For a Few Demons More is a gut-wrenching, action-packed book. Be ready for anything, because that's what's going to happen!

A Fistful of Charms is the fourth book in The Hollows series by Kim Harrison. While I love this series, this particular novel was not my favorite. This one features werewolves, but I didn't like Harrison's take on how they function together. They are all after something Nick stole, so Rachel has to help him. The whole idea of this item and what it does is just strange to me. I can't be more explicit because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone.

The main characters are here, Rachel, Al, Jenks, and Ivy; who gets more involved than usual, which was interesting. I really enjoy how Harrison grows each character throughout the books. As in real life, they change their personalities and views on issues as things happen.

The story slowed down in places, like when they hung out at the hotel trying to figure out what to do. The whole big scene on the bridge was sad and a little weird. It didn't leave me completely satisfied.

I still love the series. In my opinion, they need to be read in order to get the full benefit of the stories and the characters. So read this one, but maybe don't expect as much. They do get a lot better!

Another wholesome down-home novel by Billie Letts. After reading Where the Heart Is, I started looking to read everything else she wrote. The Honk and Holler Opening Soon shows off Letts' specialty; quirky, loveable characters. They are all broken in some way, but manage to keep going. The story slows down and plods along in a few places, but never enough that I wanted to stop reading. The book teaches about perseverance and that there are blue skies after the rain.

MaryJanice Davidson has become one of my all-time favorite authors. I first found her by reading Undead and Unwed, the first book in her Undead series. Wanting more, I found The Royal Treatment. I must be honest and say I didn't like it as much as do her Undead books, but it is a sincerely hysterical book!

The Royal Treatment is set in an alternate reality, the world is almost the same as this one, but Alaska is it's own country and has its own rulers. And boy are they a bunch of nuts! The characters are not as fully fleshed out as I prefer them to be, but I loved all of them. They each have their own quirky personality and odd habits. I want to take them all home with me!

The only negatives I found were the profanity used and the fairly explicit love scenes. As I don't really mind the language, and I blip over the love scenes if they're too much for my delicate constitution.

Books don't make me literally laugh out loud very often, but this one did. Actually, all of MaryJanice Davidson's books do. Every time!

The Keeping Place is the fourth book in The Obernewtyn Chronicles series by Isobelle Carmody, originally published in 1999. This one was a bit of a disappointment to me. All the books in the series so far have had ups and downs in the pacing, but this one was slow most of the time. The Dreamtrails parts of the story were not very exciting, even felt a little silly to me. Dragon, the wild little girl, was kept out of all the real action in the book, which I think was a mistake as she's a great character and I missed her. I've noticed that the books were published four-five years apart, so I expect more from the stories. I still like the series, and I'm hoping for better in the next installment.
Ashling is the third book in The Obernwetyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody which was first published in 1995. I'm really enjoying this series. Elspeth is becoming a young woman in Ashling. She is slowly learning and very slowly accepting her fate of being the savior of Obernewtyn and the animals. It's a lot for someone only about eighteen to take on, but Elspeth takes on the necessary responsibilities and grows ever stronger as a result. She knows she can rely on help from her friends, human and animal alike. It's a good series for older children through adults to enjoy!

Through the Ever Night is the 2nd book in the Under the Never Sky series by Veronica Rossi. It continues the story of Aria and Perry trying to survive in the outside world with its violent storms. Aria and Perry, from two different worlds, fell in love in the first book, Under the Never Sky. They were apart for a long time as Aria went home. With the beginning of Through the Ever Night, they are set to be together again.

Perry is now leader of the Tides, the people who live out in the wild. They don't trust Aria's people, the Dwellers, so Aria has a hard time fitting in. Perry must keep his people safe, even if it's against their wishes, plus he and Aria still need to save his little brother. How do they keep their relationship alive if they must separate again?

There's a lot of tension and in-fighting in the story. The people must learn to work together and accept help from outsiders in order to survive, and they may not be able to do it. The action never stops in this exciting sequel to Under the Never Sky. It's a must read series for dystopian lovers!

Night Broken is a good addition to the Mercy Thompson series. I can always count on Patricia Briggs to bring new and intriguing elements into her novels! I'd never heard of the monster in this book, but it's a real creature from mythology.

The characters are well developed and ever evolving. That's one thing I enjoy about series, the chance to see characters grow and change. One character, it seems, will never change - Christy, Adam's ex-wife. She's a little one-dimensional, but she makes a good foil for Mercy. Although werewolves are supposed to be smart, I don't understand how Christy is able to so easily manipulate all of them against Mercy.

The story flows well and is packed with suspense. I could read this in one sitting, but I made myself put it down so the experience wouldn't be over so soon. The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs is one of my favorites. Night Broken is the eighth and latest published novel. We have to wait until 2015 for the next one. So that gives you time to start from the beginning if you've never read any of the books!

An unsettling, emotional

the innocence of everyone, even herself. A dramatic portrayal of the

The story has an interesting if not unique premise. People waking up from a long coma with memory loss is a well used plot, so an author needs to have some uncommon twists and great characters to capture the readers. Unfortunately, this book didn't have either. The main character, Michelle, wasn't very likeable, although she was pitiable. Her husband was overly annoying. Michelle's search for her daughter was kind of interesting, but things didn't make sense or totally add up to the ending. The book did show the strength and endurance of a mother's love, which is always something to praise.
